Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Wa Ahdiyaka (وَأَهْدِيَكَ): And I guide you, show you the way, or lead you.
  • Ila Rabbika (إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ): To your Lord — the One who created you, nurtured you, and sustains you.
  • Fatakhsha (فَتَخْشَىٰ): So that you may fear Him — a reverent, awe-filled fear that stems from knowledge and leads to obedience.

Explanation of the Verse:

This is part of the conversation between Allah and Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) at the blessed valley of Tuwa, when Allah commanded him to go to Pharaoh, who had transgressed all bounds in arrogance and rebellion. In this verse, Musa is instructed to explain to Pharaoh what "purifying oneself" truly means: it is to be guided to the knowledge of one's Lord through clear proofs and evidence, and to attain the fear of Allah that naturally follows such knowledge.

The verse beautifully links three essential elements: guidance (hidayah), knowledge (ma'rifah), and fear of Allah (khashyah). When a person is guided to their Lord, they come to know Him through His signs, His creation, and His revelation. This knowledge is not mere intellectual awareness — it transforms the heart, producing a profound sense of reverence and awe before the Creator. This fear is not a paralyzing terror, but a motivating force that drives a person to do what pleases Allah and to avoid what displeases Him.

The sequence is crucial: guidance leads to knowledge, and knowledge leads to fear. The more you know your Lord — His greatness, His mercy, His power, His watchfulness over you — the more you naturally develop a sense of reverence that protects you from sin and inspires you toward righteousness.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message for every soul. The path to purification is open to all — even Pharaoh, the most arrogant of tyrants, was invited to this noble journey. How much more accessible is it for you, whose heart is already inclined toward truth? The invitation stands: purify yourself by knowing your Lord. Open the Quran, reflect on the universe around you, and let the signs of Allah lead you to that beautiful state of khashyah — a fear filled with love, awe, and hope. This is the key to true peace and success in this life and the next. Let your heart respond to this divine call, for it is the most precious treasure you can ever attain.
