Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Tazakkā (تَزَكَّىٰ): To purify oneself, to cleanse one's soul from spiritual impurities, and to adorn it with virtues and righteousness.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah commands His Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) to address Pharaoh—the tyrant who had transgressed all bounds in his arrogance and rebellion—with a gentle, inviting question: *"Would you like to purify yourself?"* This is not a harsh rebuke, but a compassionate call to redemption. The meaning is: "Do you desire, O Pharaoh, to cleanse your heart from the filth of disbelief, arrogance, and sin, and to adorn your soul with the light of faith and obedience to your Lord?"
The phrase "هل لك" (literally, "is there for you?") is a beautiful, soft invitation—like opening a door and asking someone if they would like to step through. It appeals to the innate goodness within every human being, even one as defiant as Pharaoh. The call is to *tazakkā*—to purify oneself from all spiritual diseases and to embrace virtue, which is the ultimate success for any soul.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson in da'wah (calling to Allah): even when addressing the worst of sinners, the approach should be one of mercy, hope, and gentle persuasion, not despair or harshness. It reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of Allah's mercy, and that a single sincere step toward purification can transform a life entirely. Allah, the Most Merciful, sent His prophet to Pharaoh—the very symbol of tyranny—with this loving invitation, showing us that the door of repentance is always open, and that every soul, no matter how lost, is worthy of being called back to its Creator.
