Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Jaheem (الْجَحِيمَ): The blazing, fiercely burning Fire of Hell — a name given to Hell due to its intense heat and raging flames.
- Al-Ma'wa (الْمَأْوَى): The place of abode, refuge, or final settlement where one resides permanently.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes the description of the fate of those who transgress. After mentioning that such a person preferred the fleeting pleasures of this worldly life over the eternal life to come, Allah declares that their ultimate destination is the blazing Fire of Hell. The word "Al-Ma'wa" signifies not just a temporary stop, but a permanent dwelling — a home they will never leave. The verse uses a definitive and emphatic structure ("indeed, the Hellfire is the abode") to leave no room for doubt or hope of escape. This is the just recompense for those who knowingly chose disobedience over obedience, and who valued the temporary over the everlasting.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse serves as a profound wake-up call. It reminds us that every choice we make in this life has consequences in the next. The person described here is not one who merely slipped or erred, but one who deliberately "transgressed" and consistently "preferred" the world over the Hereafter. Yet, the door of repentance remains open in this life. No matter how far one has strayed, Allah's mercy is vast, and He accepts those who turn back to Him sincerely. Let this verse inspire us to examine our priorities: Are we living for the temporary or the eternal? The path to Paradise is paved with patience, gratitude, and obedience — and it is never too late to begin that journey. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah stretches out His Hand at night so that the sinner of the day may repent, and stretches out His Hand in the day so that the sinner of the night may repent, until the sun rises from the west." So let us hasten to return to our Lord before the final abode is sealed.
