Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qulūbun (قُلُوبٌ): Hearts.
- Yawma-idhin (يَوْمَئِذٍ): On that Day — referring to the Day of Resurrection.
- Wājifah (وَاجِفَةٌ): Trembling, pounding violently, or beating rapidly out of intense fear and agitation.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that tremendous Day — the Day of Resurrection — the hearts of the disbelievers and the wicked will be seized by overwhelming terror. Their hearts will pound violently and tremble uncontrollably, as the reality of what they denied and mocked finally confronts them. This is not a mere flutter of anxiety; it is a deep, paralyzing dread that grips their very core, leaving them utterly shaken. The verse paints a vivid picture of the psychological torment that awaits those who rejected the truth, as their own hearts betray their inner panic and helplessness before the Might of Allah.
This state of terror is further emphasized by the following verse, which describes their eyes cast down in humiliation and disgrace, as they witness the horrors of that Day. The combination of a pounding heart and downcast eyes reflects both inner fear and outer shame — a complete state of submission and defeat before their Lord, the Just and All-Powerful.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this vivid description is not meant to frighten you for its own sake, but to awaken your heart while there is still time. The Qur'an always pairs warnings with glad tidings, and this verse is a reminder that the path to safety is open right now. The hearts that tremble in fear of Allah in this life — out of love, reverence, and a desire to obey Him — will find peace and security on that Day, for Allah promises: "Indeed, those who fear their Lord will have gardens of delight" (81:12-13). So let your heart beat with the love of your Creator today, let it tremble with awe of His greatness, and let it find rest in His remembrance. Turn to Him in sincere repentance, and He will turn your fear into tranquility, both in this world and in the Hereafter. The door of mercy is wide open — do not wait until that Day when hearts will pound in vain regret.
