Their eyes humbled.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Abṣāruhā (أَبْصَارُهَا): Their eyes/sights — referring to the eyes of the disbelievers on that Day.
  • Khāshiʿah (خَاشِعَةٌ): Humble, downcast, submissive, or lowered in fear and disgrace.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Resurrection, when the hearts of the disbelievers are seized with intense terror and trembling, their eyes will reflect that inner state. Their gazes will be cast down, humbled, and filled with disgrace — utterly subdued by the overwhelming horrors they witness. The look in their eyes will betray their complete helplessness and the weight of their guilt, as they stand before their Lord, stripped of all pride and arrogance. This is not merely a physical lowering of the gaze, but a profound sign of their inner humiliation and the crushing reality of their accountability.

This verse paints a vivid picture of that terrifying moment — a moment when every veil is lifted, every secret is exposed, and every soul reaps what it has sown. The eyes, often called the windows to the soul, will betray the utter brokenness of those who rejected the truth in this worldly life. Their former haughtiness, their mockery of the believers, and their denial of the Hereafter will all melt away into a state of abject submission — but a submission that comes too late, one that brings no benefit.

A Call to Reflection:

How different is the state of the believer! For those who lived in obedience to Allah, who lowered their gaze in this world out of reverence for their Lord, and who prepared for this Day with sincere deeds — their faces will be radiant, their eyes will be at peace, and they will be honored in the gardens of delight. The contrast could not be starker. So let this verse be a wake-up call: the Day is real, the reckoning is certain, and the eyes that today look upon the world with arrogance or heedlessness will one day be cast down in humility — either in disgrace, or in the beautiful humility of one who meets their Lord with a pure heart. Choose now, while there is still time, to be among those whose eyes will shine with joy on that Day, not those whose eyes will be lowered in shame.
