Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yantahū – They desist, cease, or refrain from their disbelief and hostility.
- Mā qad salaf – What has passed or preceded of their sins and misdeeds.
- Sunnat al-awwalīn – The established way or practice of Allah with previous nations who persisted in disbelief.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to deliver a message of both hope and warning to those who have rejected faith. The address is directed specifically to the disbelievers of Quraysh and, by extension, to all who persist in disbelief.
The first part of the message is an open door of mercy: if they cease their disbelief, their enmity against the Prophet, and their obstruction of people from the path of Allah, then all their past sins will be forgiven. This is the immense grace of Islam — it wipes away everything that came before it. A person who embraces truth with a sincere heart begins with a clean slate, as if reborn. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Islam erases what came before it" (Sahih Muslim). This is a profound invitation to every soul, no matter how burdened with sin, to know that Allah's mercy is greater than any transgression.
The second part carries a solemn warning: if they return to their disbelief and aggression after this clear call, then the established practice of Allah with earlier nations applies to them. When previous peoples rejected their messengers and persisted in stubborn denial, Allah's punishment overtook them — whether through destruction, humiliation, or defeat in this world before the Hereafter. The Battle of Badr, which had just occurred, was a living manifestation of this divine law for the Quraysh.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, contemplate the beauty of this verse. It presents a religion that does not hold people hostage to their past. No matter how dark one's history may be, the light of faith and repentance can illuminate it entirely. The door of forgiveness is wide open — all that is required is to stop, turn back, and submit to the One who created you. At the same time, do not take Allah's patience as a sign of neglect. His law is firm: those who persist in arrogance and transgression will ultimately face the consequences. The choice is yours — seize the mercy while the door is open, and let not pride or stubbornness lead you to the fate of those who came before.
