Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Fitnah (فتنة): In this context, it means polytheism (shirk), disbelief, and the persecution and oppression of believers—any trial that turns people away from the religion of Allah.
- Al-Din (الدين): The entire way of life—worship, obedience, and submission—that is due to Allah alone.
- Kulluhu (كله): Entirely, wholly, completely—leaving no room for any partner or rival to Allah in any aspect of worship or obedience.
Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, continue to strive and fight against those who oppose the truth until all forms of polytheism and persecution are eradicated, and until no believer is oppressed or turned away from the path of Allah. The goal is that worship, obedience, and devotion become purely and entirely for Allah alone—with no partner associated with Him in any way. This is the ultimate purpose of the struggle: to establish an environment where the Oneness of Allah (Tawheed) prevails, and where people are free to worship their Creator without fear or coercion.
However, if the disbelievers cease their hostility, abandon their polytheism, and turn to the truth, then do not transgress against them. Leave them in peace, for Allah is fully aware of all that they do—nothing escapes His knowledge. He sees their hearts and their deeds, and He will reward or recompense each person according to what they have earned. Their repentance and acceptance of faith are not hidden from Him, and neither are their actions thereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a profound message of justice and mercy. The struggle commanded here is not one of aggression or conquest for worldly gain—it is a struggle to remove oppression, protect the freedom of belief, and establish a society where the worship of Allah alone is possible. When the enemies of truth persist in their hostility, the believer stands firm with courage and patience. But when they incline toward peace and embrace the truth, the believer responds with grace and leaves their affairs to Allah, who sees all.
Let this verse inspire you to stand for truth and justice in your own life—not with harshness, but with wisdom and sincerity. And know that Allah's watchfulness over your deeds is a source of great hope: every sincere step you take toward Him, every act of patience and perseverance, is seen and will be rewarded. So strive with a heart full of trust in Allah, for He is with those who are patient and righteous.
