Explanation of the Verse:
This verse draws a powerful parallel between the disbelievers of Makkah and the fate of those who came before them — specifically the people of Pharaoh and the nations that preceded them. Just as those earlier peoples rejected the signs of their Lord, so too did the Quraysh reject the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). And just as Allah's punishment overtook the earlier nations, so too would it overtake these disbelievers if they persisted in their stubbornness.
The verse reminds us that the people of Pharaoh and the nations before them were not destroyed unjustly or without reason. Rather, they were destroyed because of their sins — because they denied the clear signs and miracles that Allah had shown them, because they arrogantly turned away from the truth, and because they persisted in their oppression and corruption. Pharaoh's people were drowned in the sea — a humiliating and decisive end — while the nations before them faced various forms of destruction that Allah has described throughout the Qur'an.
The verse concludes with a profound and sobering statement: "And all of them were wrongdoers." This means that both the earlier nations and the people of Pharaoh — and by extension, all who follow their path — were unjust. Their injustice was not against Allah alone, but against their own souls, for they chose disbelief over faith, arrogance over humility, and destruction over salvation.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation. Allah's law (Sunnatullah) does not change — those who reject the truth and persist in wrongdoing will face the consequences, whether in this life or the next. But the door of repentance remains open for those who turn back to their Lord before it is too late. The Qur'an repeatedly reminds us that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful, and that He delights in the repentance of His servants. So let us not be like those who saw the signs and still turned away. Instead, let us open our hearts to the truth, submit to our Creator, and live lives of justice, humility, and obedience — so that we may be among those who are saved, not among those who are destroyed. The choice is ours, and the time is now.
