Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghanimtum (what you have gained as spoils of war): The wealth, property, or goods acquired from the enemy during a legitimate military campaign.
- Halalan (lawful): Permissible and legitimate according to the rulings of Allah.
- Tayyiban (good/pure): Clean, wholesome, and free from any impurity or unlawful means.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the Battle of Badr, some believers had taken ransom from the captives of war, and a concern arose in their hearts—was this permissible? Allah, in His infinite mercy, addresses this directly: "So eat from what you have gained as spoils of war—lawful and good." This is a clear permission and a reassurance that what they acquired was not only lawful but also pure and blessed. The word *halalan* removes any doubt or guilt, while *tayyiban* emphasizes that it is wholesome and free from any taint.
Then comes the essential command: "And fear Allah." This is a call to remain conscious of Him in all matters—to uphold His commands, avoid His prohibitions, and ensure that every action, including the acquisition of wealth, is done within the boundaries He has set. Fearing Allah is the foundation of a believer's life; it purifies intentions and actions alike.
The verse concludes with a beautiful reassurance: "Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." This is a reminder that Allah overlooks the shortcomings of His servants and showers His mercy upon them. He forgives what has passed and opens the door of repentance for the future. His mercy is vast, encompassing those who turn to Him with sincerity.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear believer, this verse carries a timeless lesson for you. It teaches you that Allah does not burden you beyond what you can bear, and He does not hold you accountable for what you did in ignorance or error—provided you turn to Him in repentance and obedience. When you strive in the path of Allah, whether in battle or in your daily life, know that your efforts are not wasted. Allah grants you from His bounty, and He makes lawful for you what is good and pure. So, eat from His provision with gratitude, fear Him in every step you take, and rest assured that His forgiveness and mercy are always within reach. Let this verse inspire you to live a life of balance—enjoying the good things Allah has permitted while remaining steadfast in His obedience. For indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful to those who believe.
