Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Asra (الْأَسْرَىٰ): The captives of war, specifically those taken prisoner during the Battle of Badr.
- Khayran (خَيْرًا): Goodness, sincerity of faith, or righteous intention.
- Yu’tikum (يُؤْتِكُمْ): He will give you, grant you, or bestow upon you.
- Fida’ (الفِدَاء): The ransom money paid by the captives to secure their release.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, address the captives of Badr who have fallen into your hands and reassure them with these words: "Do not grieve over the ransom that was taken from you, for your loss is not the end of your story." If Allah knows in your hearts genuine goodness—true faith, sincere repentance, and a desire for righteousness—then He will grant you something far better than what was taken from you. He will replace your worldly loss with abundant provision, blessings, and reward in this life, and He will grant you even greater recompense in the Hereafter. Moreover, He will forgive your sins and overlook your past transgressions, for Allah is Ever-Forgiving to those who turn to Him in repentance, and Most Merciful to His servants.
This promise was not merely words—it was fulfilled for those captives who embraced Islam with sincerity. Among them was Al-Abbas, the uncle of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who paid a heavy ransom but was later blessed with immense wealth and, more importantly, with the treasure of faith. Allah compensated him and others like him with far more than they had lost, both in this world and in the life to come.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless message of hope and divine generosity. No matter how heavy your losses may seem—whether in wealth, status, or comfort—know that Allah’s compensation is always greater for those who hold goodness in their hearts. The captives of Badr were enemies of Islam, yet the moment they showed even a glimmer of sincerity, Allah opened the doors of His mercy and bounty for them. How much more, then, can you expect from your Lord if you turn to Him with a pure heart?
Do not let sorrow over what you have lost consume you. Instead, invest in what truly matters: the goodness within your heart. For when Allah sees that goodness, He does not merely return what was taken—He multiplies it, forgives your sins, and showers you with His mercy. This is the promise of the One who never breaks His word. So hold fast to hope, purify your intentions, and trust in the boundless generosity of the Most Merciful.
