Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "liman shā'a" — for whoever wills or desires.
  • "minkum" — among you (addressing all of humanity).
  • "an yastaqīm" — to be upright, to follow the straight path of truth and righteousness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes as the concluding part of a powerful series of divine oaths and proofs in Surah At-Takwir, where Allah swears by the cosmic phenomena — the stars, the night, the dawn — to affirm the truth of the Qur'an and the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). After establishing these undeniable evidences, Allah declares that this Qur'an is not the word of a devil, nor a mere human fabrication, but a pure reminder and admonition for all of humanity.

The verse states: "For whoever among you wills to be upright." This means that the Qur'an is a guidance and a reminder that benefits those who sincerely desire to walk upon the path of truth, justice, and righteousness. It is an open invitation to every soul — regardless of race, status, or background — to choose the straight path that leads to Allah's pleasure and eternal success.

The condition is clear: the door of guidance is open, but it requires a genuine will and sincere intention. Allah does not force anyone to believe; rather, He presents the truth clearly and leaves the choice to each individual. Whoever wishes to straighten their course in life — in their beliefs, their worship, their dealings, and their character — will find in the Qur'an the perfect light to illuminate their way.

However, the very next verse completes this thought by reminding us that even this will is not independent of Allah's grace: "And you cannot will except that Allah wills, the Lord of all the worlds." This teaches us a profound spiritual lesson: we must strive and sincerely desire guidance, but we must also recognize our complete dependence on Allah. True success comes when we combine our earnest effort with humble supplication to Allah to grant us steadfastness.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a beautiful call to self-reflection. Allah has placed before you the Qur'an — a complete manual for a successful life in this world and the Hereafter. The question is not whether guidance is available; it is whether you truly desire it. If you find within your heart even a small spark of longing for truth, nurture it. Seek Allah's help, read His Book with an open heart, and you will find that He will guide you step by step toward the path of everlasting peace and happiness. The door is open — will you enter?
