Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- تَشَاءُونَ (tashā’ūn): You will or desire.
- إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ (illā an yashā’a Allāh): Except that Allah wills it.
- رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ (Rabb al-‘Ālamīn): Lord of all the worlds—the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of every being and realm.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a profound conclusion to a series of divine arguments and reminders. After Allah presents the undeniable proofs of His power—the signs of the universe, the revelation of the Qur’an, and the truth of the Day of Judgment—He addresses the human heart directly. The verse clarifies a fundamental truth about human will and divine will: you cannot wish or choose to be upright, to follow the path of guidance, or to do any good, unless Allah—the Lord of all the worlds—wills it for you.
This does not mean that humans are forced or have no choice. Rather, it establishes that our free will is real, but it is not independent or absolute. We have the ability to intend, to strive, and to choose—but the very ability to act, the success of our intentions, and the guidance to the right path all come from Allah’s grace and will. He is the One who grants the desire for goodness, the strength to act upon it, and the light to see the truth. Without His will, no effort can bear fruit.
When this verse was revealed, some of the disbelievers misunderstood it and said, “The matter is in our hands—if we wish, we can be upright, and if we wish, we can deviate.” So Allah clarified that human will is always connected to and dependent upon His will. You are not forced, but you are also not self-sufficient. Your choices are yours, yet they unfold within the vast and perfect will of your Creator, who is the Lord of all existence.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder of your relationship with your Creator. It teaches you humility: you are not the master of your own destiny in an absolute sense, but neither are you a helpless victim of fate. You are a responsible being who strives, and Allah is the One who blesses your striving. So when you feel weak, when you stumble, or when you long to change your heart—turn to Allah. Ask Him to will goodness for you, to place in your heart the desire for righteousness, and to grant you the strength to act upon it. For He is the Lord of all the worlds, and His mercy is vast enough to guide every sincere soul who knocks at His door. Do not despair of His help, and do not rely solely on your own power. Instead, combine your sincere effort with a heartfelt supplication, and you will find that the One who created you is ever ready to support you on the path that leads to His pleasure and eternal success.
