Word Meanings:

  • "Kalla" (كَلَّا): Absolutely not! A strong negation and rebuke.
  • "Bal" (بَلْ): Rather / In fact — used to redirect and correct a false notion.
  • "Rāna" (رَانَ): It has covered, enveloped, and overwhelmed — like rust that forms on a metal surface and gradually eats into it.
  • "Qulūbihim" (قُلُوبِهِم): Their hearts (the seat of understanding and faith).
  • "Mā kānū yaksibūn" (مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ): What they used to earn — i.e., their sins, wrongdoings, and acts of disobedience.

Explanation of the Verse:

The verse begins with a firm and decisive rebuke: "Kalla!" — Absolutely not! This is a direct rejection of the arrogant claim made by the disbelievers that the Qur'an is nothing but "tales of the ancients." Allah refutes this falsehood and then reveals the real reason behind their denial.

"Bal rāna 'alā qulūbihim mā kānū yaksibūn" — Rather, what they have earned has covered their hearts with rust. This is a profound and vivid image: just as rust gradually forms on a shiny metal surface and destroys its luster, so too do sins and persistent disobedience darken the heart, layer upon layer, until it becomes completely sealed off from the light of truth. The heart that was created pure and capable of recognizing its Creator becomes so stained by repeated wrongdoing that it can no longer see the truth, even when it is as clear as the sun.

This verse teaches us a crucial spiritual principle: sin is not merely an act of disobedience — it has a cumulative effect on the soul. Every wrong action leaves a mark on the heart. When a person continues in sin without repentance, these marks accumulate and form a hard covering — the "ran" — that blocks the heart from receiving guidance. This is why we see people who hear the Qur'an yet remain unmoved, or who witness clear signs of Allah's power yet still deny them. Their hearts have become veiled by their own deeds.

The scholars have noted that this "rust" is of varying degrees. Some hearts are lightly dusted and can be easily cleaned with sincere repentance. Others are heavily corroded, and their owners may find it extremely difficult to return to the truth. This is a warning to every believer: do not take sin lightly, for it is not just an action — it is a poison that slowly kills the heart's ability to perceive the truth.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for every soul. It invites us to examine our own hearts: Are they bright and receptive to the Qur'an, or have they begun to rust under the weight of neglect and disobedience? The good news is that the door of repentance is always open. Just as rust can be removed from metal with polishing, the heart can be cleansed through sincere repentance, seeking Allah's forgiveness, and increasing in acts of worship and remembrance of Him.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents, gives up the sin, and seeks forgiveness, his heart is polished. But if he increases in sin, the black spots increase until they cover his heart. That is the 'ran' which Allah mentions in the Qur'an: 'Rather, what they have earned has covered their hearts with rust.'" (Reported by Ibn Majah and others)

So let this verse be a wake-up call. Do not let your heart become a prisoner of your own sins. Turn back to Allah today, before the rust becomes too thick and the light of faith can no longer penetrate. Allah is Al-Ghafoor (The Most Forgiving) and Al-Tawwab (The Acceptor of Repentance). He is waiting for you with open arms, ready to polish your heart and fill it with the light of certainty and peace. The Qur'an is not "tales of the ancients" — it is the living word of your Creator, a guide to eternal success. Open your heart to it, and let its light dispel every trace of darkness.
