Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Musaytir (بِمُصَيْطِرٍ): One who is appointed over others to compel or force them, a controller or an overseer with authority to coerce.
Tafsir (Explanation):
You, O Messenger, are not appointed as a tyrant or a coercer over them. You are not sent to force people into faith against their will. Your task is not to compel hearts or to dominate people with power and control. Rather, your role is that of a warner and a guide—you convey the message, call to the truth, and remind with wisdom, but the matter of guidance rests solely with Allah. He alone turns hearts and grants faith to whom He wills. So do not grieve over their rejection, and do not burden yourself with what is not your responsibility. Your duty is to deliver, and His is to judge.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and liberating message for every believer and caller to Islam. It relieves us of the heavy burden of trying to control outcomes or force people to believe. Islam is a religion of mercy and free will—it invites, explains, and inspires, but never compels. The Prophet ﷺ was the greatest of all callers, yet even he was told: "You are not a controller over them." So how much more should we, as ordinary Muslims, focus on presenting the beauty of Islam with kindness, patience, and good character, leaving the results to Allah? This is a religion that respects human intellect and freedom, and it is this very gentleness that draws hearts to its light. When you share the message of Islam, do so with love and sincerity, and trust that Allah—the Turner of Hearts—will guide whom He wills. Your reward is in your effort, not in the outcome.
