Word Meanings:

  • Fa-aktharū (فَأَكْثَرُوا): They increased or multiplied extensively.
  • Al-Fasād (الْفَسَاد): Corruption, wickedness, mischief, and disorder — encompassing disbelief, oppression, injustice, killing, and all forms of transgression against Allah’s commands.

Explanation of the Verse:

These tyrants and oppressors, who had been given power and authority in the land, did not merely commit occasional wrongdoings — rather, they multiplied corruption wherever they went. They spread disbelief, practiced injustice, shed blood unlawfully, and filled the earth with mischief and wickedness. Their transgression was not a single act but a persistent, escalating pattern of evil that affected the lives of countless people.

This verse serves as a stern warning that no matter how long such oppressors may seem to flourish, their end is near. Allah, the Most High, observes all their deeds and does not overlook any of their crimes. He grants them respite for a time, but when His punishment descends, it is swift, severe, and inescapable. The Almighty is ever watchful over those who defy Him — He gives them a little time, then seizes them with the grip of the Mighty, the All-Powerful.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder over the fate of these nations of old. They were given strength, wealth, and dominion — yet they chose the path of corruption over gratitude. Their power did not protect them, and their numbers did not avail them. This is a timeless lesson for every soul: that no position, wealth, or influence can shield a person from the justice of Allah. Let this verse awaken within you a profound sense of accountability. Turn to your Lord in humility, mend your ways, and strive to be among those who spread goodness and righteousness in the earth — for the Hereafter is far better and more enduring than anything this fleeting world can offer.
