Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- طَغَوْا (Taghaw): They transgressed, exceeded all bounds, and became arrogant and tyrannical.
- فِي الْبِلَادِ (Fil-Bilad): In the lands/countries — meaning throughout the earth where they lived and ruled.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse refers to the nations mentioned just before it — 'Ad, Thamud, and Pharaoh — who were characterized by extreme transgression and tyranny in their lands. They did not merely commit sins privately; rather, they spread corruption openly, oppressed the weak, and acted with immense arrogance and pride. Their transgression was not limited to one area but permeated their entire societies. They abused their power, enslaved people, and rejected the messengers sent to them. They thought their strength and wealth would protect them, but their power only fueled their arrogance and led them further away from the truth. Their story serves as a timeless lesson: no matter how mighty a person or nation becomes, Allah's justice is inevitable. The verse calls us to reflect on how power, when divorced from faith and humility, becomes a destructive force — both for its wielder and for those under their authority. It reminds us that true greatness lies not in domination, but in submission to the Creator and in justice toward His creation. Every tyrant who has ever walked the earth has met their end, and Allah's watchfulness over the deeds of all people is absolute and inescapable.
