Word Meanings:
- تَرَبَّصُونَ – You wait/anticipate.
- الْحُسْنَيَيْنِ – The dual form of "al-husna" (the best/good thing), meaning one of the two best outcomes.
- يُصِيبَكُمُ – He afflicts/strikes you.

Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, say to those who harbor ill intentions toward you and the believers: "Are you waiting for anything to befall us except one of the two best things?" Indeed, the believer is always in a winning position—either Allah grants him victory and triumph over his enemies, or he is blessed with martyrdom in the cause of Allah, which is the ultimate honor and the gateway to eternal Paradise. Both outcomes are beautiful and desirable for the believer.
Meanwhile, we are waiting for you to receive one of two punishments: either Allah will send upon you a chastisement from Himself—such as destruction, calamity, or death—or He will give us authority over you, and we will fight you and take you as captives. So wait, then, for what Allah will do with each of us. We are also waiting, with full certainty and trust in Allah's promise of victory for His righteous servants.
This verse instills in the believer a profound sense of tranquility and confidence. Whatever happens, the believer is never a loser. If he lives, he lives with honor and victory; if he dies, he dies as a martyr in the way of Allah. What a beautiful fate! So hold firm to your faith, and never fear the plots of the enemies, for Allah is with the believers, and His promise is true.
