Word Meanings:
- طَوْعًا (Taw'an): Willingly, voluntarily, of one's own accord.
- كَرْهًا (Karhan): Unwillingly, reluctantly, under compulsion.
- لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمْ (Lan yutaqabbala minkum): It will never be accepted from you — meaning, Allah will not accept it as a deed of obedience or reward.
- فَاسِقِينَ (Fasiqin): Those who have deviated from the path of Allah, disobedient, rebellious against His commands.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, tell these hypocrites clearly: Spend your wealth however you wish — whether you give it willingly or under pressure, whether you donate in public or in secret — Allah will never accept any of it from you. Why? Because the root of the problem is not the amount or the manner of giving; it is the state of your hearts. You have turned away from Allah's guidance, you have broken His covenant, and you persist in disobedience and hypocrisy. Your outward actions, no matter how generous they may appear, are tainted by your inner corruption. Just as a tree with rotten roots can never bear good fruit, so too your spending — built upon disbelief and rebellion — can never rise to Allah as an accepted deed.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the value of our deeds is not measured by their outward form alone, but by the faith and sincerity that fill our hearts. When a person's relationship with Allah is sound, even a small coin given in charity becomes a mountain of reward. But when that relationship is broken through sin and hypocrisy, even vast wealth spent in the name of goodness brings no benefit in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken you to the beauty of sincere faith. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance for everyone — even the hypocrites mentioned in this verse were not beyond His call. The very fact that Allah addresses them with a command shows that He still invites them to mend their ways. How much more, then, are you — a believer who loves Allah and His Messenger — capable of earning His acceptance? Do not let your good deeds become empty shells. Fill them with the light of faith, the sweetness of sincerity, and the joy of knowing that Allah sees your heart. When you give, give for His sake alone. When you act, act with love for Him. And you will find that Allah accepts from you what no amount of wealth could ever buy: His pleasure and His eternal reward.
