Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَرَأَيْتَ (Have you seen/considered): An expression used to draw attention to something astonishing and to provoke thought.
  • عَلَى الْهُدَى (upon guidance): Following the path of truth, righteousness, and divine direction.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a rhetorical manner, asking him to reflect upon the astonishing situation of the one who forbids others from worship. The verse poses a profound question: Have you considered, O Prophet, if the one being forbidden—the praying servant—is upon clear guidance from his Lord?

The implication here is powerful and thought-provoking. If the person being prevented from prayer is following the path of truth and righteousness, then what justification could the one forbidding him possibly have? The question exposes the absurdity and injustice of the oppressor's position. It challenges the reader to think logically: How can anyone forbid another from goodness, truth, and connection with their Creator?

This verse is part of a larger passage that addresses Abu Jahl, a prominent opponent of Islam who threatened to stop the Prophet (peace be upon him) from praying at the Kaaba. The rhetorical style of the Quran here is masterful—it doesn't simply condemn the action but invites the listener to reason through the situation themselves, making the injustice self-evident.

The beauty of this verse lies in its universal application. It calls upon every person to reflect: When you see someone upon guidance, upon the straight path, upon goodness—what right does anyone have to stand in their way? This is a call to respect religious freedom, to honor the seeker of truth, and to recognize that hindering someone from righteousness is a grave injustice.

Dear reader, this verse also carries a beautiful reassurance. It reminds us that when we are upon guidance, when we sincerely seek our Lord, no oppressor's threats can truly harm us. Allah sees everything, and He defends those who turn to Him. The one who forbids good may appear powerful in this world, but their schemes are known to Allah, and His protection over the guided believer is absolute.

Let this verse strengthen your resolve: If you are upon guidance, continue steadfastly. Do not let the disapproval of others deter you from your path of worship and righteousness. The One who guided you will also protect you.
