Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Aqim wajhaka" (أَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ): Literally "set your face" — meaning to direct your entire being, intention, and purpose firmly and steadfastly toward something, without deviation.
- "Lid-deen" (لِلدِّينِ): The true religion — Islam, the pure monotheistic faith of submission to Allah alone.
- "Haneefan" (حَنِيفًا): One who turns away from all falsehood and inclines wholly and sincerely toward the truth — upright, deviating from every path except the straight path of Allah.
- "Mushrikeen" (الْمُشْرِكِينَ): Those who associate partners with Allah in worship — the polytheists.
The Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a direct command from Allah to His Messenger (peace be upon him), and through him, to the entire Muslim nation. Allah instructs the believer to "set one's face" — meaning to dedicate one's whole self, heart, soul, and actions — to the religion of Islam with complete sincerity and uprightness. The word *haneefan* emphasizes that this dedication must be exclusive and pure: turning away from every false belief, every corrupt practice, and every deviation, and inclining only toward the truth of monotheism.
The command is not merely to *believe* in the truth but to *stand firm* upon it, to make it the foundation of one's life, and to remain steadfast in it under all circumstances. This is a call to unwavering commitment — not a fleeting emotion or a temporary phase, but a permanent orientation of the soul toward Allah.
Then comes the prohibition: *"And do not be among the polytheists."* This is a stern warning against associating any partner with Allah — whether in worship, in love, in fear, or in hope. The polytheist is one who divides their devotion, and this verse makes clear that such a path leads only to ruin. Even the slightest inclination toward shirk is a departure from the *haneef* way.
Although this address is directed at the Prophet (peace be upon him), it is a universal message for every believer. Every Muslim is called to embody this *haneef* character — to live a life of pure devotion, to turn away from all that contradicts the oneness of Allah, and to remain firm upon the straight path until meeting their Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a beautiful invitation to purify your heart and straighten your course. Imagine your life as a journey — this verse tells you to set your compass toward Allah and never look back. It frees you from the confusion of multiple loyalties and the burden of divided devotion. When you make Islam your sole direction, you find peace, clarity, and strength that nothing else can provide.
The world today calls you in countless directions — toward materialism, toward fleeting desires, toward false gods of wealth, status, and self. But this verse reminds you that true success lies in turning your face to the One who created you, sustains you, and will judge you. Be among those who stand firm, who are known for their sincerity, and who refuse to compromise their faith for any worldly gain. This is the path of the Prophets, the path of the righteous, and the path that leads to eternal bliss. Embrace it with your whole heart, and let it transform every moment of your life.
