Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Waylun (وَيْلٌ): A severe punishment, destruction, or a valley in Hellfire. It is a word of threat and warning.
- Lil-Musalleen (لِلْمُصَلِّينَ): For those who pray (i.e., those who perform the ritual prayers).
Tafsir (Explanation):
After describing the traits of those who deny the Day of Recompense—those who repel the orphan and do not encourage feeding the needy—Allah now turns to a group that outwardly appears religious but is inwardly negligent. He says: "So woe to those who pray"—meaning destruction and severe punishment await them. These are not the disbelievers, but rather people who claim to be Muslims and stand in prayer, yet they are heedless of their prayer. They do not perform it properly, nor do they observe its appointed times. They delay it until its time passes, or they rush through it without humility, focus, or reverence. Their prayer is merely a physical ritual devoid of soul and sincerity. They pray to be seen by people, not out of love for Allah or fear of His punishment. Such people are threatened with "wayl"—a deep pit in Hell—because they betrayed the very act of worship that should have purified their hearts and reformed their lives.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear Muslim, this verse is a profound wake-up call. It teaches us that prayer is not a routine to be completed carelessly—it is a lifeline connecting the servant to his Lord. The one who prays but remains heedless, who prays but continues to cheat, oppress, and neglect the rights of others, has missed the very essence of the prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The first thing for which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is sound, he will succeed; if it is corrupt, he will fail." So let us ask ourselves: Are we among those who pray with presence of heart, or are we among the heedless? Let us strive to perfect our prayers—performing them on time, with khushu' (humility), and with the awareness that we are standing before the King of Kings. For the prayer that truly transforms is the one that prevents immorality and wrong-doing, as Allah says: "Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing" (Al-'Ankabut: 45). May Allah make us among those who establish prayer as He loves and commands, and protect us from the fate of the heedless. Ameen.
