Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Tajree" (تجري): It sails and moves swiftly.
  • "Mawj" (موج): The towering, surging waves of water.
  • "Ma'zil" (معزل): A place of separation and isolation, away from others.
  • "Yaa bunayya" (يا بني): A tender, affectionate address meaning "O my dear son."

Tafsir (Explanation):

The ark sailed on, carrying Noah (peace be upon him) and the believers through waves that rose like mountains—massive, overwhelming, and terrifying in their height and power. It was a scene of divine wrath upon the disbelievers, yet within this storm of destruction, the mercy of prophethood and the compassion of fatherhood shone through. Noah, driven by love for his son—who was a disbeliever and had isolated himself from his father and the believers—called out to him, saying: "O my dear son, board the ark with us, and do not be among the disbelievers, so that you may be saved from the punishment of drowning."

This call was not merely an invitation to physical safety; it was a heartfelt plea for his son's salvation in both this world and the Hereafter. Noah knew that the flood was a divine decree against those who rejected the message of monotheism, and he desperately wanted his son to be among the saved, not the destroyed. The verse captures the profound emotional struggle of a prophet who, despite being tasked with delivering God's warning, still yearned for his own flesh and blood to find guidance.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This scene teaches us the depth of a believer's love for others—especially for family. Noah did not abandon his son, even when the son had chosen a path of disbelief. He reached out with mercy and guidance, hoping to pull him back from the brink of destruction. As believers, we are called to embody this same spirit: to lovingly invite our families and communities to the truth, never giving up on them, and always praying for their guidance. The ark of salvation is the ship of faith—whoever boards it with sincerity is saved, and whoever turns away faces the storm alone. Let us be like Noah, extending our hands in compassion, and let us be like those who boarded, trusting in God's mercy through every towering wave of life's trials.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Hud

[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, "Load upon the ship of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed." But none had believed with him, except a few.
And [Noah] said, "Embark therein; in the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."
And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Noah called to his son who was apart [from them], "O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers."
[But] he said, "I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water." [Noah] said, "There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy." And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned.
And it was said, "O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain]." And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and the ship came to rest on the [mountain of] Judiyy. And it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people."
