Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sā'awī (سَآوِي): I will take refuge or seek shelter.
- Ya'simunī (يَعْصِمُنِي): It will protect me, guard me, or prevent harm from reaching me.
- 'Āsim (عَاصِم): A protector, guardian, or one who prevents something.
- Ḥāla (حَالَ): It came between, separated, or intervened.
- Al-Mawj (الْمَوْج): The towering, surging waves of the flood.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the flood began and the waters rose violently, Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) called out to his son, urging him to board the Ark and join the believers rather than remain among the disbelievers. But his son, blinded by arrogance and a false sense of security, rejected the call. He said defiantly: *"I will take refuge on a mountain — it will protect me from the water!"* He imagined that a high, solid peak could shield him from the decree of Allah, as if any creation could ever stand against the command of its Creator.
Prophet Nūḥ, with the deep wisdom and mercy of a father and a prophet, responded to him with a profound truth: *"There is no protector today from the command of Allah — except for the one upon whom He has mercy."* In other words, no mountain, no fortress, no power on earth can save a soul from the punishment of Allah when His decree has come to pass. The only true refuge is the mercy of Allah Himself — and that mercy is granted to those who believe, repent, and submit to His will. Nūḥ was essentially telling his son: "The only way to be saved is to believe and board this ship; there is no other escape."
But before the son could reconsider, the towering waves surged between them, separating father from son forever. The son was swallowed by the waters and became one of those who drowned — a tragic end for one who had been so close to salvation yet chose to rely on his own illusions instead of the mercy of his Lord.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every human being. How often do we, like the son of Nūḥ, place our trust in worldly "mountains" — wealth, status, intelligence, technology, or even our own good deeds — believing they will protect us from the consequences of our choices? But when the storms of life come, and when the ultimate decree of Allah arrives, none of these can avail us. The only true refuge is the mercy of Allah, which He bestows upon those who turn to Him with sincere faith and obedience.
Dear reader, do not wait until the waves separate you from the ship of salvation. The Ark of Nūḥ is the guidance of Allah — the Qur'an and the Sunnah of His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Board it today with faith and righteous action. Do not be like the one who was within arm's reach of safety yet perished because of pride and false confidence. The door of Allah's mercy is open — but it will not remain open forever. Seize the moment, repent, and submit to your Lord before the waves come between you and your chance.
