Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Laysa min ahlik" — "He is not of your family": meaning, not of the people whom Allah promised to save, because the criterion for salvation is faith, not blood relation.
  • "Amalun ghayru salih" — "A deed that is not righteous": referring to his disbelief and the corrupt path he followed, which rendered him outside the fold of the saved.
  • "Ma laysa laka bihi 'ilm" — "That of which you have no knowledge": meaning, the hidden wisdom and divine decree behind the matter, which is known only to Allah.
  • "A'izuka" — "I admonish you": a gentle yet firm warning and guidance from Allah to His prophet.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound moment, Allah addresses His noble prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) with a gentle but decisive correction. Nuh had just pleaded with Allah to save his son, who had drowned in the flood, thinking that his fatherly love and the promise of saving his family included this son. But Allah clarifies that this son was not truly from his family in the sense that matters — the family of faith and righteousness. Although he was Nuh's biological son, his disbelief had severed the spiritual bond. Allah says: "He is not of your family; indeed, he is a deed that is not righteous."

This teaches us a fundamental principle: true kinship in Islam is based on faith, not merely on blood. A person may be your closest relative by lineage, but if they reject the truth, they are not from your people in the sight of Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The son of Nuh was not from his family, but the son of Adam's daughter — Maryam — was from his family through faith." This shows that what connects believers is their submission to Allah, and what separates them is disbelief.

Allah then says: "So do not ask Me for that of which you have no knowledge." This is a beautiful lesson in humility before the divine wisdom. Nuh, despite being a great prophet, did not know the full picture of Allah's decree. He saw his son as a beloved child, but Allah saw him as a disbeliever whose fate was sealed by his own choices. The believer must trust that Allah's knowledge encompasses all things, and that what He decrees is always just and wise, even if we do not understand it fully at the moment.

Finally, Allah says: "Indeed, I admonish you, lest you be among the ignorant." This is not a rebuke that diminishes Nuh's rank, but rather a loving correction that elevates him. It reminds us that even the best of creation can be guided to a higher understanding. The "ignorance" here refers to asking for something that contradicts divine wisdom — not knowing that the son's disbelief made his destruction inevitable. Allah was teaching Nuh, and through him all of humanity, that we must submit to Allah's decree with complete trust and contentment.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse carries a timeless message for all of us. How often do we find ourselves attached to people or things that are not good for us, simply because of emotional bonds? How often do we question Allah's wisdom when we face trials, not realizing that He knows what we do not know? Let this verse strengthen your faith: Allah's knowledge is perfect, His justice is absolute, and His mercy encompasses all. When you submit to His decree — even when it breaks your heart — you are following the footsteps of the prophets themselves.

And let this also be a reminder of the importance of faith over lineage. Your true family is the family of faith. Surround yourself with those who bring you closer to Allah, and never let love for anyone — no matter how close — lead you to defend or excuse disbelief. The Prophet Nuh's story teaches us that even the greatest love must bow before the truth of Allah's command.

May Allah grant us the wisdom to accept His decree with patience, the insight to distinguish truth from falsehood, and the strength to remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. Ameen.

[Noah] said, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers."
It was said, "O Noah, disembark in security from Us and blessings upon you and upon nations [descending] from those with you. But other nations [of them] We will grant enjoyment; then there will touch them from Us a painful punishment."
