Word Meanings:

  • Sabbih (سَبِّحْ): Glorify Allah, declare Him free from all imperfections, and exalt Him above any deficiency.
  • Bi-hamdi Rabbika (بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ): With the praise of your Lord — combining glorification with gratitude and acknowledgment of His blessings.
  • Wastaghfirhu (وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ): Seek His forgiveness — asking Him to pardon your shortcomings and sins.
  • Tawwāban (تَوَّابًا): The One Who constantly accepts repentance, repeatedly turning to His servants with mercy and forgiveness.

Explanation of the Verse:

This blessed verse comes as a divine directive following the great victory and conquest of Makkah — a moment of triumph for the believers. When Allah grants His servant success and opens the way for His religion, the appropriate response is not pride or arrogance, but rather humility before the Almighty. The command here is twofold:

First, glorify your Lord with His praise — meaning, declare His perfection and thank Him for His countless favours, especially the blessing of victory and the spread of His guidance. This is a recognition that all success comes solely from Allah, and that He alone deserves all praise and exaltation.

Second, seek His forgiveness. This instruction to the Prophet ﷺ — despite his being protected from sin — teaches us a profound lesson: the closer a servant is to Allah, the more he recognises his own shortcomings in fulfilling the rights of His Lord. It also signals that the Prophet's mission was nearing its completion, and he was being prepared for his meeting with his Lord. The verse beautifully indicates that noble deeds should be concluded with seeking forgiveness — just as prayers end with it, and pilgrimage concludes with it.

The verse closes with the comforting assurance: "Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance." This is a promise of hope — that Allah does not merely accept repentance, but He actively welcomes it, repeatedly, without fatigue or hesitation. He turns to His servant with mercy, erases sins, and replaces them with good deeds.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse carries a timeless message for every one of us. When you achieve success in any matter — whether in your studies, your work, your family life, or your religious endeavours — remember that the greatest protection against arrogance is to glorify Allah and thank Him. And when you fall into sin, no matter how great, never despair of Allah's mercy. His door of repentance is always open, and He is always ready to forgive.

Make it a daily habit to say: *Subhāna Allahi wa bi-hamdihi, astaghfirullāha wa atūbu ilayh* (Glory be to Allah with His praise, I seek His forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance). This simple phrase combines the two commands of this verse and brings immense blessings. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that whoever says it, Allah will forgive his sins even if they were like the foam of the sea.

Let this verse inspire you to live a life of gratitude and constant return to Allah — for He is the Most Merciful, the Ever-Forgiving, the One Who never turns away a sincere penitent.
