Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Malik (مَلِكِ): The Sovereign King, the One who possesses absolute authority and dominion over all creation.
  • An-Nās (النَّاسِ): All of humankind, every single person from the first to the last.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes Allah as the King of all people. He is the absolute Sovereign Who has complete authority and control over every human being. His kingship is not like the kingship of worldly rulers, who are limited in their power, subject to weakness, and dependent on others. Rather, Allah's kingship is perfect and absolute: He is the Owner of all people, the One Who disposes of their affairs as He wills, and the One Who is entirely free of any need for them.

Allah alone possesses the fullness of authority over humanity—He commands, He forbids, He gives life, He causes death, He grants honor, and He brings humiliation. No one can overturn His decree, and no one can question His will. Every person, regardless of their status, wealth, or power, is under His dominion and subject to His rule. There is no king or ruler besides Him who truly owns anything; all worldly authority is merely borrowed and temporary, while His sovereignty is eternal and absolute.

This description of Allah as the King of mankind follows the previous verse, which described Him as the Lord of mankind. It reminds us that the One Who created us and cares for us is also the One Who has full authority over us. This dual description instills in the believer a profound sense of reverence and submission, knowing that we are in the hands of a King Who is both merciful and all-powerful.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent truth: the King of all kings, the Sovereign of all that exists, is your Lord and your Protector. When you seek refuge in Him, you are seeking refuge in the Most Powerful, the Most Majestic, the One Whose authority no one can challenge. What comfort and security this brings to the believer's heart! No matter how overwhelming your trials may seem, remember that the One Who holds absolute kingship over all people is your Guardian. Turn to Him with humility, place your trust in Him with certainty, and find peace in knowing that you are under the care of the King Who never fails, never tires, and never abandons His servants. This is the essence of true faith—to recognize His sovereignty and to submit to His will with love and devotion.
