Word Meanings:

  • Ilah (إِلَٰهِ): The deity, the one who is worshipped with love, reverence, and submission. It refers to the only being deserving of worship and devotion.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes Allah as "the God of mankind" — the One who alone deserves to be worshipped by all people. He is the true deity, the only being who has the right to receive prayers, supplication, and acts of worship. No one else — whether human, jinn, angel, or any created thing — shares this right with Him. Every act of worship directed to anyone other than Allah is false and invalid, because only Allah is the true God, the Creator, the Sustainer, and the Sovereign of all that exists.

The verse comes as a continuation of the previous ones, emphasizing that Allah is not only the Lord (Rab) who creates, sustains, and manages the affairs of all creation, but He is also the Ilah — the One whom hearts naturally incline to, love, and worship. This repetition of "mankind" in the three verses of this Surah (Lord of mankind, King of mankind, God of mankind) highlights the immense care and mercy Allah has for humanity, and how He alone is worthy of their complete devotion and trust.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this profound truth: the One who protects you, provides for you, and hears your every whisper is none other than your true God — the only One worthy of your worship. When you turn to Him in prayer, you are not turning to a distant, indifferent force, but to a loving Lord who knows your deepest needs. How beautiful is this relationship! You have a God who is both your Lord, your King, and your Deity — three aspects of His care that assure you of His complete authority and His absolute worthiness of your love. Let your heart find peace in knowing that the God you worship is the only true God, and that no one else deserves even a fraction of your devotion. Turn to Him alone, and you will find a protector, a provider, and a beloved that never disappoints.
