Surah Yusuf — Verse 46

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the messenger finally reached Yusuf (peace be upon him) in prison, he addressed him with the most honorable title: "Yusuf, O you who are extremely truthful!" This title itself is a testimony to Yusuf's character — even in the darkness of prison, his truthfulness and piety shone so brightly that people recognized him as the epitome of honesty.

The man then presented the dream: "Explain to us about seven fat cows that are eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and seven dry ones." This was the dream that had troubled the king and his court, causing confusion and anxiety throughout the land. The man hoped that Yusuf's interpretation would bring clarity and relief.

He added: "Perhaps I may return to the people so that they may know." He wanted to go back to the king and his assembly with an answer that would not only solve their puzzle but also reveal the great knowledge and virtue of this righteous man confined in prison.

This verse beautifully illustrates several profound lessons:

1. Truthfulness is a crown that never fades: Even in the darkest circumstances, Yusuf's honesty and integrity earned him the title "As-Siddeeq." His imprisonment did not diminish his honor; rather, it elevated his status, for people saw that his truthfulness was not a fair-weather trait but a deep-rooted quality of his soul.
2. Knowledge is a light that cannot be hidden: Yusuf's gift of interpreting dreams was a divine blessing that Allah had granted him. Even behind prison walls, this knowledge became a means for his eventual deliverance. Never underestimate the power of beneficial knowledge — it opens doors that no locks can close.
3. Allah's plan unfolds in mysterious ways: The very dream that seemed to be a random vision of the king became the instrument of Yusuf's release from prison and his rise to a position of great authority. What appeared to be a difficult trial was actually the beginning of a magnificent victory.
4. The importance of seeking answers from the right people: The messenger was sent specifically to Yusuf because people recognized his wisdom and truthfulness. When faced with confusion, we should always seek guidance from those who are known for their knowledge, integrity, and connection with Allah.

This story reminds us that no matter how difficult our circumstances may be, Allah never abandons His righteous servants. The same trial that tests us can become the very means of our elevation. Let us strive to be like Yusuf — truthful in all matters, patient in hardship, and ever-reliant upon Allah's wisdom. For indeed, after every darkness comes a dawn, and after every hardship comes ease.
