Word Meanings:

  • Fityanihi (فِتْيَانِهِ): His young servants or assistants.
  • Bida'atahum (بِضَاعَتَهُمْ): The goods or money they had brought in exchange for grain — i.e., the price they paid.
  • Rihalihim (رِحَالِهِمْ): Their saddlebags, luggage, or travel provisions.
  • Yarji'un (يَرْجِعُونَ): They would return (to Egypt).

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, instructed his servants with profound wisdom and generosity: "Place their payment back into their saddlebags secretly." This was not an act of deception but a masterful strategy rooted in kindness and foresight. He knew that when his brothers returned to their family in Canaan and opened their luggage, they would find the money they had paid for the grain. This would make them realize that the Egyptian official — who was, in fact, their own brother — had not taken their wealth at all. Instead, he had honored them by returning it.

Yusuf's intention was twofold. First, he wanted them to recognize the generosity and noble character of the one who had received them, so that their hearts would be softened and their trust in him would grow. Second, he hoped that this act of kindness would compel them to return to Egypt — not out of greed, but out of gratitude and a sense of moral obligation. They would feel ashamed to keep the money without returning, and they would also be encouraged to come back, perhaps bringing their younger brother Benjamin with them, as Yusuf had secretly planned.

This verse beautifully illustrates the Islamic principle of *ihsan* (excellence in dealing with others). Yusuf did not use force or harshness to achieve his goal; he used generosity and subtle wisdom. He planted the seeds of love and trust in their hearts, knowing that true influence comes through kindness, not coercion. Even when dealing with those who had wronged him — his brothers who had thrown him into a well years earlier — he chose the path of forgiveness and benevolence.

For us, this is a profound lesson: when we wish to mend relationships, win hearts, or correct a wrong, the most effective and blessed approach is to lead with generosity and good character. Yusuf's actions remind us that a believer's strategy is never built on revenge or humiliation, but on elevating others and giving them every reason to respond with goodness. This is the way of the prophets — to transform enemies into friends through patience, wisdom, and sincere kindness.

Moreover, the verse shows how Allah's plan unfolds through the noble choices of His righteous servants. Yusuf's gentle tactic was not merely a personal scheme; it was part of a divine design that would eventually reunite a family, bring about reconciliation, and establish justice in the land. When we act with pure intentions and trust in Allah, He guides our efforts toward outcomes far greater than we can imagine.

Let this beautiful story inspire you to be a person who plants goodness wherever you go. Even when you are in a position of power, as Yusuf was, use that power to give, to forgive, and to open doors of hope for others. This is the character of a true believer — one whose actions draw people closer to the light of faith and the beauty of Islam.

📜 Verse 60-64 — Yusuf

But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."
They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]."
And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."
