Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Kayl (الكَيْل): The measure of grain or food that was being distributed. Here, it refers to the food ration itself, as it was measured out.
- Naktal (نَكْتَل): We will measure and receive our share of grain.
- Lahāfiẓūn (لَحَافِظُونَ): We will be his guardians, protectors, and guarantors of his safe return.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the brothers returned to their father Ya‘qūb (peace be upon him), they recounted the generous hospitality they had received from the Egyptian official—who was, in truth, their brother Yūsuf, though they did not recognize him. They then said: "O our father, the measure (of grain) has been withheld from us—meaning, we will not be given any more provisions unless we bring our brother (Binyāmīn) with us. So send him along with us, and we will surely receive our full share of grain. And we promise you, we will be his protectors, guarding him carefully and bringing him back to you safely."
They were not lying in this instance; they genuinely intended to keep their word, for they had seen how the official had treated them with honor and had returned their money, and they had given their solemn pledge. Yet, unknown to them, this was all part of Allāh’s divine plan to reunite Yūsuf with his full brother and to bring about the eventual fulfillment of Yūsuf’s childhood dream.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about trust, family bonds, and the importance of honoring one’s promises. The brothers, despite their past mistakes, showed a willingness to take responsibility and to reassure their father. In our own lives, how often do we seek to rebuild trust after a lapse? How often do we reassure our loved ones with sincere commitment? Islam calls us to be people of integrity—those who, when they promise, fulfill it, and when they are entrusted, protect that trust. The Qur’ān repeatedly emphasizes that the believer is one who keeps his covenants (al-Mu’minūn: 8). Let this be a reminder to us all: whether in our families, our communities, or our dealings with others, let our word be our bond, and let us strive to be trustworthy in all matters, for Allāh loves those who are true to their promises. And just as Allāh turned the brothers’ journey into a means of mercy and reunion, He too can turn our sincere efforts—even our failures—into pathways of His grace, if we turn back to Him with honesty and repentance.
