Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse highlights two distinct reactions to the revelation sent down to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). On one hand, there are those among the People of the Book—the Jews and Christians—who were given the Torah and the Gospel, and who genuinely believed in their original, unaltered messages. When they received the Qur'an and recognized its truth, they rejoiced greatly, because it confirmed what they already knew from their scriptures and aligned with the core truths they held dear. These sincere believers, such as Abdullah ibn Salam and the Negus of Abyssinia, found in the Qur'an a source of joy and affirmation, for it called to the same fundamental principles of monotheism and righteousness that their own prophets had brought.
On the other hand, there were factions among the People of the Book—those who had hardened their hearts and aligned themselves in opposition to the truth—who rejected parts of the Qur'an. Their denial was not based on genuine doubt, but rather on arrogance, envy, and the fact that the Qur'an exposed their distortions of scripture and contradicted their worldly interests and desires. They accepted what suited their whims and rejected what challenged their corrupt practices.
Then comes the divine instruction to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to declare his mission clearly and unequivocally: "Say: I have only been commanded to worship Allah and not to associate partners with Him." This is the essence of his message—pure, unadulterated monotheism. His call is not to himself, not to any tribe or nation, but solely to Allah. And his ultimate return, his final destination, is to his Lord alone.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us that the truth is not measured by how many accept it or reject it. The joy of the sincere believers and the denial of the obstinate factions are both part of the divine test. What matters is that we remain steadfast upon the pure worship of Allah alone, calling others to Him with wisdom and patience, and remembering that our final return is to Him. Let this be a source of comfort and strength for you, dear reader—know that when you stand firm upon the truth, you are following the very path of the prophets, and your ultimate destination is the Most Merciful, who will reward you beyond measure. Embrace this beautiful message of pure monotheism, and let it illuminate your heart and guide your steps toward eternal success.
