Key Words and Phrases:

  • Sab‘an min al-Mathānī (سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِي): The "seven oft-repeated" verses — referring to Surah Al-Fātihah, the opening chapter of the Qur’an, which consists of seven verses and is recited repeatedly in every unit of prayer (ṣalāh).
  • Al-Qur’ān al-‘Aẓīm (الْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيم): The Magnificent Qur’an — the entire Book of Allah, which is described here as great and sublime in its majesty, guidance, and wisdom.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with a profound reminder of the immense blessings bestowed upon him. Allah says: "And indeed, We have given you the seven oft-repeated verses (Al-Fātihah) and the Magnificent Qur’an."

The "seven oft-repeated verses" refers to Surah Al-Fātihah, the opening chapter of the Qur’an. It is called "oft-repeated" because Muslims recite it in every single unit of their obligatory and voluntary prayers — it is repeated constantly, day and night, in every rak‘ah. Despite its brevity, it contains the essence of the entire Qur’an: praise of Allah, acknowledgment of His sovereignty, expressions of worship, and heartfelt supplications for guidance along the straight path.

The verse then mentions "the Magnificent Qur’an" — the entire revelation that was sent down to the Prophet ﷺ. Some scholars explain that this refers to the whole Qur’an, which is a comprehensive guide for all of humanity, containing laws, stories, admonitions, and glad tidings. Others note that the Qur’an is described as "great" because of its unmatched eloquence, its profound wisdom, and its eternal relevance.

This verse carries a beautiful message of honor and consolation. Allah is reminding His Prophet ﷺ — and by extension, every believer — that the gift of the Qur’an is the greatest treasure one can possess. It is a source of light, healing, and mercy. When the Prophet ﷺ faced hardship or opposition from his people, this verse reassured him that what he had been given was far greater than anything the world could offer.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent gift. Allah has given us the keys to success in both worlds — the Fātihah, which we recite at least seventeen times a day, and the entire Qur’an, which is a living miracle that guides us through every aspect of life. How fortunate are we to have access to this divine treasure! Let us not be negligent of it. Let us recite it with reflection, understand its meanings, and implement its teachings in our daily lives. For whoever holds firmly to the Qur’an has indeed grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks. And whoever turns away from it has lost the greatest blessing imaginable.

May Allah make us among those who truly honor the Qur’an, who recite it, live by it, and are blessed by its intercession on the Day of Judgment.
