Surah Al-Hijr — Verse 88

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a profound lesson that carries timeless wisdom for every believer. Allah commands His Messenger not to cast his eyes with longing and desire toward the fleeting worldly pleasures and luxuries that He has granted to certain groups among the disbelievers. These are but temporary enjoyments — wealth, status, comfort, and adornments — that will soon vanish and bring no lasting benefit. The Prophet is being taught that the true treasure lies in the Hereafter, and that the transient glitter of this world is not worthy of a believer's aspiration or envy.

Allah then says: "And do not grieve over them." This means the Prophet should not feel sorrow or distress over the disbelievers' refusal to accept the message of truth, nor should he be troubled by their stubbornness and rejection. His duty was only to convey the message clearly; guidance is in Allah's Hands alone. This is a comfort to the Prophet and to every caller to the truth — that we should not exhaust ourselves with grief over those who turn away, for their affair is with Allah.

Finally, Allah commands: "And lower your wing for the believers." This beautiful imagery — of a bird lowering its wing over its young — signifies profound humility, gentleness, and compassion. The Prophet is instructed to be soft, kind, and humble toward the believers, treating them with mercy, patience, and love. This is a call to build a community founded on mutual care, respect, and tenderness, where the strong support the weak and all are united in brotherhood.

It teaches us to purify our hearts from envy and worldly greed, for what others possess of material wealth is but a test, not a blessing to be coveted. It also teaches us resilience: do not let the rejection of others break your spirit. If you have conveyed the truth with sincerity, then leave the results to Allah, for He is the Best of Planners.
