Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sayyi’at (سَيِّئَاتُ): The evil consequences and punishments resulting from one's bad deeds.
- Hāqa (حَاقَ): To surround, envelop, or descend upon someone from all sides—used exclusively for calamity and punishment.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes the fate of those who rejected the truth and mocked the messengers. After they persisted in their arrogance and ridicule, the divine decree overtook them: the evil consequences of their own deeds struck them directly, and the very punishment they used to mock—whenever they were warned about it—came down upon them and encircled them completely. They could not escape it, nor could they find any refuge from it.
The verse carries a profound lesson: what they sowed, they reaped. Their own actions—their disbelief, their mockery, and their persistent rejection of guidance—became the very cause of their destruction. The punishment they laughed at in this world became an inescapable reality in the Hereafter, surrounding them from every direction like a fortress with no exit.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this divine truth: no one is ever harmed except by their own deeds. Allah does not wrong anyone in the least, but it is people who wrong themselves. When we see those who mock the truth and ridicule the believers, let us remember that their end is already written in the pages of divine justice. The Qur'an repeatedly warns us not to be deceived by the temporary success of those who reject faith, for their ultimate fate is sealed.
This verse is a mercy for us—it teaches us to take our actions seriously, to repent before it is too late, and to never treat the warnings of Allah as mere jokes. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The fire of Hell is surrounded by desires, and Paradise is surrounded by hardships." Those who mock the truth are merely delaying their own reckoning. Let us be among those who take heed, who turn back to Allah in sincerity, and who never allow arrogance or mockery to take root in our hearts. For the One who is Just and All-Knowing never fails to bring every soul to its rightful account.
