Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تأتيَهُمُ الملائكةُ — The angels come to them, specifically the Angel of Death and his assistants, to seize their souls.
- أمرُ ربِّكَ — The command of your Lord, meaning His decree of punishment, whether in this world or the onset of the Hour.
- كَذَٰلِكَ فَعَلَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ — In this very manner did those before them act, meaning they too persisted in disbelief and denial.
Explanation of the Verse:
What are these disbelievers waiting for, O Messenger? Are they waiting for anything other than one of two inevitable ends? Either the angels will come to them — the Angel of Death and his helpers — to seize their souls while they are still entrenched in their disbelief, striking their faces and backs at the moment of death, or the command of your Lord will arrive: a swift punishment in this world that destroys them utterly, or the establishment of the Hour with all its terrors.
This is not something new or unprecedented. Those who came before them — the disbelieving nations of old — did exactly the same. They rejected their messengers, mocked the truth, and persisted in their arrogance, and so Allah's punishment overtook them. Their fate stands as a lesson for all who follow in their footsteps.
Yet let it be absolutely clear: Allah did not wrong them in the least when He destroyed them. He is the Most Just, the Most Merciful. Rather, it was they who wronged their own souls. They brought destruction upon themselves through their own choices — their disbelief, their stubbornness, and their rejection of the clear truth that was presented to them. They harmed themselves by their own actions, even if they did not intend to harm themselves directly.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: Allah never wrongs anyone, not even by a hair's breadth. Every hardship, every consequence we face is the natural result of our own choices. How merciful is our Lord, who gives us chance after chance, sending messengers and revelations to guide us, yet we sometimes turn away! The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not wait for the angels to come to you while you are in a state of heedlessness. Return to your Lord now, while you still have time, and you will find Him Forgiving and Merciful. The choice is yours — and the outcome of that choice is yours as well.
