Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Waṣiban (وَاصِبًا): Permanent, constant, everlasting, or continuous. It signifies something that is firmly established and never ceases.
- Ad-Dīn (الدِّين): Here, it means obedience, submission, worship, and sincere devotion. It also encompasses the idea of the religion itself being owed to Him alone.
- Tattaqūn (تَتَّقُونَ): You fear, you are cautious of, or you are mindful of. In this context, it refers to the fear of punishment and the reverence that leads one to obey.
Explanation of the Verse:
To Allah alone belongs everything that exists in the heavens and the earth. This is not merely a statement of ownership, but a declaration of absolute reality: He is the Creator, the Sustainer, the Sovereign, and the Manager of all affairs. Every atom, every creature, every force of nature is under His command and dominion. Nothing happens without His will.
And to Him alone belongs *ad-dīn* — all worship, obedience, and sincere devotion — *wāṣiban*, meaning perpetually and eternally. This is not a temporary or conditional allegiance; it is the natural and unchangeable right of the One who created and sustains all. The very fabric of existence is built upon submission to His will, and therefore, the worship of Him is the only fitting response from His creation.
The verse then poses a powerful, rhetorical question: "Do you then fear other than Allah?" This is a question of rebuke and astonishment. If everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him, and if all true devotion is due to Him alone, then how can any rational person direct their fear, their hope, or their worship towards anything else? To fear a creature is to give that creature a status that belongs only to the Creator. It is a profound contradiction.
The answer is clear: No, you should not fear anyone or anything besides Allah. All fear, all reverence, and all hope should be directed to Him alone, for He is the only One who holds true power over all things. He is the One who can benefit and harm, the One who gives life and causes death, and the One to whom all matters will return.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful invitation to purify our hearts and direct our entire being towards our true Master. Imagine a life where your only fear is of displeasing Allah, and your only hope is in His mercy. This is the essence of true freedom — freedom from the shackles of fearing creation. When you know that everything is in His hands, your heart finds rest. Your worries about what others might do to you, your anxieties about your provision, your fears of the unknown — all of these dissolve when you place your complete trust in the One who owns everything.
This is the core of Islam: a pure, unshakable monotheism (*Tawheed*). It liberates the soul from the servitude of creation and elevates it to the noble station of servitude to the Creator alone. So, let this verse be a reminder to you: check your heart. What do you fear the most? What do you love the most? What do you obey the most? If the answer to any of these is other than Allah, then this verse is a gentle, yet firm, call to return to the natural path of true submission and peace.
