Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ni‘mah (نعمة): Every blessing, favor, or bounty—whether religious (like guidance and faith) or worldly (like health, wealth, children, and security).
- Al-Ḍurr (الضر): Harm, distress, or adversity—such as illness, poverty, drought, or any hardship that afflicts a person.
- Taj'arūn (تجأرون): You cry out loudly and plead earnestly, raising your voices in supplication and desperation, like an animal that bellows in distress.
Explanation of the Verse:
O humanity, reflect deeply upon this profound truth: every single blessing you possess—the breath in your lungs, the beating of your heart, the food on your table, the safety you enjoy, the faith that guides your soul—all of it, without exception, comes from Allah alone. No one else grants these favors, and no one else sustains them for you. He is the Sole Source of every good that reaches you, whether you recognize it or not.
Yet here is the striking reality of the human condition: when ease and comfort surround you, you often forget the Giver and become heedless. But the moment hardship strikes—when illness touches your body, when poverty tightens its grip, when drought parches the land, when fear seizes your heart—you instinctively turn to Allah alone. Your hearts, regardless of your outward claims, cry out to Him in desperate supplication. You raise your voices to Him, pleading for relief, because deep within your fitrah (innate nature) you know that only He can remove the harm.
This verse beautifully highlights a fundamental truth: the One who grants blessings in times of ease is the very One you call upon in times of distress. So why not turn to Him in both states? Why not thank Him when He gives, and trust Him when He tests? The One who answers you in your moment of desperation is the One who deserves your worship, your gratitude, and your devotion at all times—not merely when you need Him.
Let this verse awaken your heart, dear reader. Allah is not distant from you; He is closer than your own jugular vein. He hears your whispered prayers and knows your silent needs. When you call upon Him in your darkest hour, He listens. So call upon Him now—not only when hardship strikes, but in every moment of your life. Thank Him for His countless blessings, and let your heart remain connected to Him in ease and in adversity alike. For He alone is the Giver of all good, and He alone is the Remover of all harm.
