Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ilahayn ithnayn: Two gods or two deities to be worshipped.
  • F-arhaboon: Fear Me, be in awe of Me, and hold Me in reverence.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Exalted, addresses all of humanity with a clear and decisive command: do not take two gods for worship. This prohibition is not merely about the number of deities but strikes at the very heart of what divinity means. The very concept of two gods is a logical and spiritual contradiction—if there were two gods, each would claim absolute power, and their wills would inevitably clash, leading to corruption and disorder in the universe.

Allah then establishes the fundamental truth: He is only One God. His Oneness (Tawhid) is not just a numerical fact but an essential attribute of His divinity. A true god must be unique, without partner, peer, or equal. The unity of Allah is reflected in the harmony and consistency of His creation—the heavens, the earth, and everything within them operate under one divine system, testifying to the singularity of their Creator.

The verse concludes with a powerful directive: "So fear Me alone." This fear is not a paralyzing terror but a reverent awe and mindfulness that stems from recognizing Allah's absolute power, justice, and authority. It means directing all our reverence, obedience, and caution toward Him alone—not toward idols, not toward human beings, not toward nature, and not toward our own desires. When we fear Allah alone, we free ourselves from the fear of creation, for nothing can harm us except by His will, and nothing can benefit us except by His grace.

This verse beautifully combines the two pillars of Islamic faith and practice: the affirmation of Allah's Oneness (Tawhid) and the sincere devotion that flows from it. It calls us to purify our hearts from all forms of shirk (associating partners with Allah), whether in worship, in trust, or in fear.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate the beauty of this divine call. Allah does not simply say "do not worship two gods"—He explains why: because He alone is the One God, and He alone deserves your reverence. This is not a restriction but a liberation. When you place your fear and hope in the One who controls all things, your heart finds peace. You no longer live in anxiety about what others might do to you, what the future holds, or what powers may seem threatening. Your entire being is anchored in the Most Merciful, the Most Just, the All-Powerful.

Islam invites you to this pure, unshakable faith—a faith that elevates you above superstition, above the worship of human beings, above the servitude to material desires. It is the path of the Prophets, from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). They all proclaimed the same truth: there is no god but Allah. Embrace this truth, and you will find the key to true success in this life and the next. Let your heart tremble with awe of your Creator, and let that awe transform you into a person of righteousness, humility, and inner strength.

📜 Verse 49-53 — An-Nahl

And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.
They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.
And Allah has said, "Do not take for yourselves two deities. He is but one God, so fear only Me."
And to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him is [due] worship constantly. Then is it other than Allah that you fear?
And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.
