Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Āyatayn (آيَتَيْنِ): Two signs or miraculous indicators pointing to Allah’s power and oneness.
  • Maḥawnā (مَحَوْنَا): We erased or blotted out — meaning We removed the light and made it dark.
  • Mubṣirah (مُبْصِرَةً): Giving light or making things visible — i.e., the day is bright so that eyes can see clearly.
  • Fadlan (فَضْلًا): Bounty or provision — referring to seeking livelihood and sustenance.
  • Ḥisāb (الْحِسَابَ): Calculation — counting days, months, and years.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah draws our attention to two of His greatest signs in the universe: the night and the day. These are not mere natural phenomena; they are living proofs of Allah’s absolute power, wisdom, and oneness. He made the night dark and tranquil, and the day bright and illuminating. The darkness of the night was created for rest and stillness, while the light of the day was made for sight, activity, and the pursuit of livelihood.

Allah says: *"And We made the night and day two signs. So We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible."* The "sign of the night" refers to the moon, whose light was dimmed so that the night remains dark enough for sleep and peace. The "sign of the day" refers to the sun, which Allah made brilliantly bright so that people can see clearly and go about their daily affairs.

The wisdom behind this alternation is twofold: First, so that you may seek the bounty of your Lord — meaning you can work, trade, farm, and travel during the daylight hours to earn your provision in a lawful manner. Second, so that you may learn the number of years and the calculation of time. Through the rising and setting of the sun and the phases of the moon, humanity is able to mark the passage of days, months, and years — which is essential for organizing worship (like fasting and Hajj), business transactions, and all aspects of social life.

Finally, Allah says: *"And We have explained all things in detail."* This is a reminder that nothing in this universe is random or without purpose. Allah has laid down clear signs, precise systems, and detailed guidance — both in the natural world and in His revealed Book — so that humanity may live with clarity, justice, and faith.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look around you. The sun rises every morning and sets every evening — not by accident, but by the perfect command of Allah. This precise system is a mercy from your Lord, designed to make your life easier and to draw you closer to Him. When you see the light of day, remember that Allah is the One who illuminated your path — both physically and spiritually. When you rest in the darkness of night, know that His mercy grants you peace and renewal.

This verse invites you to reflect: if Allah has arranged the sun and moon with such precision, how much more does He care for you? He did not leave you without guidance — He sent the Qur'an, the ultimate "light," to illuminate your heart and soul, just as the sun illuminates the earth. So let this verse inspire you to seek His bounty with gratitude, to use your time wisely, and to worship Him with certainty — for He is the One who has explained everything for your benefit, out of His infinite love and wisdom.

And man supplicates for evil as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty.

And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open.
14اقْرَأْ كِتَابَكَ كَفَىٰ بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا
[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."
