Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yad'u – He calls/supplicates.
- Bish-sharr – For evil/harm (i.e., against himself or others).
- Du'a'ahu bil-khayr – Just as he would supplicate for good.
- 'Ajulan – Hasty, impatient, impulsive by nature.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse highlights a profound human weakness: when a person becomes angry or frustrated, he may impulsively pray against himself, his children, or his wealth—calling for harm and destruction upon them—just as readily as he would pray for goodness and blessing. This is a manifestation of ignorance and haste, for in moments of rage, the human being loses sight of what is truly beneficial and harmful.
Imagine a father who, in a fit of anger at his son's misbehavior, curses him, saying, "May you be ruined!" Or a person who, upon losing money, exclaims, "May I be destroyed!" These are real, spoken supplications—and had Allah answered them as He answers prayers for good, the person would indeed be ruined, and his family and wealth would perish. But out of His immense mercy and profound knowledge of His servant's true intentions, Allah does not respond to such hasty, ill-considered prayers for evil. He knows that the person did not genuinely mean what he said—it was merely a fleeting outburst of anger.
The verse concludes by stating that man is inherently hasty ('ajulan). This is not merely a description of a bad habit; it is a fundamental trait of human nature. Man is impatient, restless, and quick to react without reflection. He wants things immediately, and when things go wrong, he rushes to destructive words and actions without pausing to think of the consequences.
A Call to Reflection and Betterment:
Dear believer, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder to guard your tongue, especially in moments of anger. Your words are not without weight—they are supplications that ascend. How often do we hear people cursing their own children, their jobs, or even their own lives in moments of frustration? The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the supplication of a person against his own family, wealth, and self may be answered if it is not hasty—so imagine the danger of such prayers!
Let this verse inspire you to be deliberate and patient. When anger rises, remember that Allah is the Most Merciful, and He has given you the ability to choose your words. Replace curses with blessings, and replace haste with thoughtful prayer. Ask Allah for good for yourself and your loved ones, for He loves those who are patient and who call upon Him with hope, not with despair.
And know that Allah's mercy is greater than your anger. Even when you slip, He does not punish you for your momentary lapses—but He also calls you to rise above this weakness, to become a person of dignity, self-control, and wisdom. This is the path of the righteous, and it is a path that leads to peace in this life and the next.
