Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- الْهُدَىٰ (Al-Huda): The guidance; here referring to the Qur'an and the clear message brought by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- أَبَعَثَ (Abaʿatha): "Has He sent?" — a rhetorical question expressing denial and astonishment.
- بَشَرًا رَّسُولًا (Basharan Rasūlā): A human being as a Messenger — a mortal man chosen by Allah to deliver His revelation.
Explanation of the Verse:
What prevented the disbelievers of Makkah from embracing faith when the clear guidance of the Qur'an reached them was not any lack of evidence or truth in the message itself. Rather, it was their own arrogant and ignorant objection: they said, with surprise and rejection, "Has Allah sent a human being as a Messenger?" They found it strange that a mortal man — someone who eats, walks in the markets, and lives among them — would be chosen by Allah to carry His divine message. They expected, in their misguided thinking, that a Messenger should be an angel or some supernatural being. This objection was nothing but an excuse, for throughout history, Allah has always sent messengers from among their own people, so that they could understand them, learn from them, and see in them a living example of righteousness and obedience.
The truth is that this objection was not based on genuine inquiry or a sincere search for truth, but on stubbornness and a refusal to submit to Allah's wisdom. Allah, in His infinite mercy, chose human messengers precisely because humans can relate to them, follow their example, and recognize that prophethood is not about being an angel, but about being chosen by Allah and supported by His revelation and miracles.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on the profound wisdom of Allah's choice. He sent messengers from among humanity so that we might see in them a practical model of how to live a life of faith, patience, and devotion. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a human being — he faced trials, felt joy and sorrow, and overcame challenges — yet he was the best of creation, guided by Allah and supported by miracles that proved his truthfulness.
Do not let such weak excuses keep you from the light of faith. When the truth reaches you clearly, respond with an open heart and a humble mind. The Qur'an is the eternal guidance that addresses your intellect and your soul. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is always open. Do not be like those who rejected the truth out of pride — be among those who recognized it, believed in it, and lived by it, for they are the successful ones.
