Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mala'ikah (مَلَائِكَةٌ): Angels — celestial beings created from light, who obey Allah's commands without fail.
- Yamshūna muṭma'innīn (يَمْشُونَ مُطْمَئِنِّينَ): Walking with tranquility and settledness — i.e., dwelling on earth, moving about in peace and stability, just as humans do.
- Lanzzalnā (لَنَزَّلْنَا): We would have sent down — indicating a conditional divine response.
- Malakan rasūlan (مَلَكًا رَّسُولًا): An angel as a messenger — a being of the same kind as the recipients.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, respond to those who reject your message simply because you are a human being, by saying: "If there had been angels on earth — beings who walk about, settle, and live in tranquility just as you do — then We would have sent down to them from the heavens an angel as a messenger."
This is because the wisdom of Allah dictates that a messenger must be of the same nature as the people to whom he is sent. An angel cannot be sent to humans, for they would not be able to see him, hear him directly, or comprehend his speech in a way that allows them to learn from him. Likewise, if the inhabitants of the earth were angels, it would be fitting for their messenger to be an angel — one who shares their nature, so that he can communicate with them clearly and they can understand him fully.
The underlying principle here is profound: the heart is more inclined toward its own kind. When a person sees a messenger who eats, drinks, walks in the markets, experiences joy and sorrow, and faces the same trials of life, they find it easier to relate to him, to trust him, and to follow his example. A human messenger makes the divine message practical and applicable — he demonstrates how to live by it in the very reality we inhabit.
So, O people, do not be surprised that a human has been chosen as a messenger. This is not a flaw — it is a mercy. It is Allah's perfect wisdom to send a guide who is one of you, so that you may learn from his life, his character, and his conduct. The message is not about the vessel; it is about the treasure it carries — the guidance of the Lord of the worlds.
A Call to Reflection and Love for the Divine Wisdom:
This verse invites us to marvel at the perfect wisdom of Allah in every aspect of His creation and His revelation. He knows what suits His servants best, for He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. The choice of a human messenger is not a sign of distance from Allah — rather, it is a sign of His immense love and care for humanity. He did not leave us without guidance, nor did He send what we could not comprehend. He sent us a man from among us — the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — who lived the Qur'an in every detail of his life, so that we might see the path to Allah embodied in a human being we can love, emulate, and follow.
Let this truth fill your heart with gratitude: your Lord knows you, understands your nature, and has provided you with a guide who is perfectly suited to your reality. Embrace this message, and let the example of the Prophet ﷺ be your lamp in the darkness of this world, leading you to the eternal light of Paradise.
