Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zukhruf (زُخْرُف): Ornamented or decorated, specifically with gold and other precious adornments.
- Tarqā (تَرْقَى): To ascend or climb up.
- Ruqiyyika (رُقِيِّكَ): Your ascent or climbing.
- Subḥāna Rabbī (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي): Glory be to my Lord — an expression of declaring Allah’s absolute perfection and transcendence above any deficiency or need.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their stubbornness and arrogance, continued to make impossible demands of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Among their final demands, they said: "Or you may have a house made of gold, or you may ascend into the sky — and even if you ascend, we will never believe in your ascent until you bring down to us a written book that we can read with our own eyes, confirming that you are truly a messenger of Allah."
These demands were not born out of a sincere search for truth, but rather from pure obstinacy and a desire to mock and reject. They knew in their hearts that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was truthful, yet they refused to submit to the truth. Their requests were not signs of genuine curiosity — they were excuses to continue in their disbelief.
So Allah commanded His Messenger to respond with astonishment at their audacity: "Say: Glory be to my Lord! Am I anything but a human messenger?"
This response carries profound lessons for every believer:
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) was a human being, not an angel or a supernatural being. He was a servant of Allah, chosen to deliver the divine message. He had no power to bring about these miracles on his own — all power belongs to Allah alone. If Allah willed to grant these signs, He could, but Allah’s wisdom did not require them.
- The declaration "Glory be to my Lord" here serves two purposes: it glorifies Allah and declares His transcendence above being subject to anyone’s demands, and it expresses the Prophet’s amazement at their foolish requests. How could a mere human being, a servant of Allah, be expected to produce such wonders at will?
- The essence of prophethood is not to perform miracles on demand, but to convey the message of Allah with sincerity and patience. The greatest miracle the Prophet (peace be upon him) brought was the Qur’an itself — a living, eternal miracle that challenges all of humanity to produce anything like it, and they cannot.
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful response. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not become angry or frustrated with their mockery; rather, he responded with patience, wisdom, and glorification of his Lord. This is the character of a true believer — when faced with ignorance and arrogance, we turn to Allah, glorify Him, and remain steadfast upon the truth.
The lesson for us today is profound: do not be shaken by those who mock Islam or demand impossible signs. The truth of Islam stands firm upon clear evidence — the Qur’an, the authentic Sunnah, and the undeniable logic of the message itself. Those who truly seek the truth will find it; those who make excuses will never be satisfied, no matter what signs they are shown.
So hold fast to your faith, dear believer, and know that the Prophet (peace be upon him) faced even greater hostility with patience and trust in Allah. Follow his example, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
