Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • الصَّخْرَةِ (Al-Sakhrah): The rock where they had stopped and rested.
  • أَوَيْنَا (Awayna): We took refuge or sought shelter.
  • نَسِيتُ الْحُوتَ (Naseetu Al-Hoot): I forgot to mention the matter of the fish.
  • مَا أَنسَانِيهُ (Ma Ansaneehu): Nothing made me forget it.
  • الشَّيْطَانُ (Al-Shaytan): Satan, the accursed.
  • وَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُ (Wattakhadha Sabeelahu): It took its path or way.
  • عَجَبًا (Ajaban): Something astonishing and amazing.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the young companion, Yusha' (Joshua), peace be upon him, remembered what had happened at the rock, he turned to Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, and said: "Did you see what happened when we took shelter at that rock? I completely forgot to tell you about the fish! And nothing made me forget to mention it to you except Satan himself, who distracted me with his whispers."

Then he described the miraculous event: the dead fish came back to life, sprang into the sea, and made its way through the water in a most astonishing manner — leaving a dry, hollow path behind it like a tunnel or an archway, as if it were a carved passage in the water. This was indeed a wonder that defied the natural order of things, a clear sign from Allah that the servant they were seeking — Al-Khidr — was to be found at that very spot where the fish had leaped into the sea.

This moment marks a turning point in the journey of Musa, peace be upon him. It was the sign Allah had given him to locate the righteous servant from whom he would learn great wisdom. The forgetting of the fish was not a mere accident; it was part of Allah's divine plan, for had they remembered it at the right time, they might have missed the encounter altogether. But Allah, in His infinite wisdom, allowed the forgetfulness to occur so that the meeting would take place at the appointed time and place.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, see how Allah's plan unfolds in ways we cannot imagine! Even a moment of forgetfulness — something we often view as a flaw or a failure — was the very means by which Musa, peace be upon him, found what he was seeking. How often do we experience delays, setbacks, or "mistakes" in our lives, only to realize later that they were part of Allah's perfect design?

This teaches us to trust Allah completely, to never despair when things don't go as we planned, and to know that Allah's wisdom surpasses our understanding. The Qur'an is filled with such lessons that strengthen our faith and bring tranquility to our hearts. When you read the Book of Allah with reflection, you will find that every story, every verse, carries a light that guides you through the darkness of this world. So hold fast to the Qur'an, for it is the rope of Allah — whoever clings to it will never be lost, and whoever seeks guidance in it will never be misguided.

65فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَا آتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا
And they found a servant from among Our servants to whom we had given mercy from us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.
