Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Fatāhu (فَتَاهُ): His young servant, the youth who accompanied him (Yusha' ibn Nun, peace be upon him).
- Ghadā'anā (غَدَاءَنَا): Our morning meal, the food prepared for the early part of the day.
- Nasaban (نَصَبًا): Weariness, fatigue, and hardship.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and his young servant had passed beyond the place where they had forgotten the fish—the very spot they were destined to return to—Musa felt the pangs of hunger. It was then that he turned to his faithful companion and said: "Bring us our morning meal; indeed, we have encountered from this journey of ours great fatigue."
This moment is deeply significant. Musa had been commanded by Allah to undertake a long and arduous journey to meet a righteous servant of Allah (Khidr, peace be upon him) to learn knowledge that he did not possess. The journey had been tiring, and the signs along the way—particularly the miraculous revival of the fish and its escape into the sea—were reminders of the divine plan unfolding before them. Yet, it was only after they had moved past that exact location that Musa felt the weight of exhaustion, and this prompted him to ask for food. At that moment, his servant remembered the astonishing event of the fish coming back to life and slipping into the sea, which was the very sign they had been seeking.
This verse teaches us beautiful lessons: the importance of patience during long and difficult journeys in pursuit of knowledge and righteousness, the value of having a sincere companion who shares your mission, and the wisdom of Allah in guiding His servants to the right place at the right time—even through hunger, fatigue, and apparent delays. When we strive sincerely for Allah's sake, He never lets our efforts go to waste, and He opens doors for us at the most unexpected moments. So, dear believer, never lose heart when the road seems long and the burden feels heavy; your reward and your breakthrough may be just around the corner, as it was for Musa and his devoted companion.
