Word Meanings:

  • Dhikr (ذِكْرُ): This refers to a mention, narration, or recounting of something significant.
  • Rahmah (رَحْمَةِ): Mercy, compassion, or a special favor and blessing from Allah.
  • Zakariyya (زَكَرِيَّا): Prophet Zachariah (peace be upon him), a noble messenger of Allah and the father of Prophet John (Yahya).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse opens Surah Maryam with a profound and beautiful introduction: "This is a mention of your Lord's mercy to His servant Zakariyya." It is a declaration that what follows in the upcoming verses is not merely a historical tale, but a living testimony of Allah's boundless mercy and grace towards His righteous servants. The verse highlights that the story of Zakariyya (peace be upon him) is being recounted to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and to all of humanity — as a source of reflection and profound lessons.

The emphasis here is on mercy — the mercy of the Lord, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, being showered upon a devoted servant. Zakariyya was a prophet who, despite his old age and the apparent impossibility of his situation, turned to his Lord with sincere supplication. This verse sets the stage for a narrative filled with hope, patience, and the certainty that Allah's mercy knows no bounds. It teaches us that when a servant calls upon his Lord with a pure heart, Allah responds in ways that surpass human expectation.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this beautiful opening. Allah, the Most Merciful, chose to immortalize the story of His servant Zakariyya in the eternal Quran — not to merely inform us of past events, but to plant seeds of hope in our hearts. If Allah's mercy reached Zakariyya in his moment of deepest need, then His mercy is equally within your reach today. No matter how old your age, how heavy your burdens, or how impossible your dreams may seem, the door of Allah's mercy is wide open for every sincere servant who calls upon Him. The Quran is not a book of distant stories; it is a living guide, and every verse is an invitation to draw closer to your Creator. Let the mention of this mercy inspire you to turn to Allah in every moment of your life, for His mercy encompasses all things.
