Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nādā (نَادَىٰ): He called out or supplicated, raising his plea to Allah.
- Rabba-hu (رَبَّهُ): His Lord — the One who created, sustains, and cares for him.
- Nidā’an khafiyyan (نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا): A hidden, secret call — a supplication made quietly, away from the ears of others.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse takes us back to the moment when Prophet Zakariyyah (peace be upon him) stood in his place of worship, the mihrab, and raised his hands to his Lord with a call that was soft and concealed. He did not shout or announce his need publicly; rather, he whispered his plea to Allah in the stillness of the night, when hearts are most attentive and distractions are fewest.
Why did he choose secrecy? Because a hidden supplication reflects the deepest sincerity — the servant turns to his Master alone, seeking no praise or recognition from people. It is a pure act of humility, acknowledging that only Allah can answer, and it draws the believer closer to His mercy. The scholars have noted that a quiet call is often more effective in attaining a response, for it comes from a heart fully present, untainted by show. Zakariyyah, despite his old age and the weight of his longing for a child, did not make a spectacle of his need; he poured it out in the quiet hours, trusting that Allah hears even the faintest whisper.
This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson: you do not need to raise your voice for Allah to hear you. He knows the secrets of your heart and the silent tears you shed. When you call upon Him in the depth of the night, away from the eyes of creation, you are honoring His majesty and affirming your total dependence on Him. Such a call is a sign of true faith, and it opens the doors of divine generosity.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear believer, let this scene inspire you. If a noble prophet like Zakariyyah — a man of high station — chose to humble himself in secret supplication, how much more should we, with all our shortcomings, turn to Allah in quiet desperation? The night is a precious gift; it is a time when the veils between you and your Creator are thin, and His mercy descends upon those who seek Him. Make it a habit to whisper your needs to Him — your worries, your hopes, your fears — and know that He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. The One who answered Zakariyyah’s hidden call is the same Lord who hears you today. So call upon Him with a humble heart, and He will answer in the way that is best for you, in this life or the next.
