Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAbd Allāh: Servant/slave of Allah, denoting complete submission and devotion to Him alone.
- Ātānī al-Kitāb: He has given me the Book (the Gospel, Injīl).
- Wa jaʿalanī nabiyyan: And He has made me a prophet.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah narrates the miraculous words of Prophet ʿĪsā (Jesus, peace be upon him) while he was still an infant in the cradle, speaking by the power and permission of Allah to defend his mother Maryam (peace be upon her) against the false accusations of her people. He declared: "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah." With this opening statement, ʿĪsā established the most fundamental truth about himself—that he is a created servant of Allah, not a deity or a partner in divinity. This was a decisive refutation of those who would later claim that he was God or the son of God. He then proclaimed that Allah had given him the Book, meaning the Gospel (al-Injīl), and had appointed him as a prophet. Some scholars explain that this refers to what Allah had already decreed and would bestow upon him as he grew, while others note that even as a child, ʿĪsā was granted profound understanding and wisdom beyond his years, receiving the revelation of the Gospel early in his life. His speech as a newborn was itself a divine miracle, proving his innocence and his mother's chastity, and establishing his prophethood from the very beginning.
Daʿwah Message:
This verse carries a timeless and powerful lesson for every believer. The first words of ʿĪsā, peace be upon him, were not about his own greatness or status, but rather a humble declaration of servitude to Allah: "I am the servant of Allah." This teaches us that the highest honor any human being can attain is not in claiming divinity or superiority, but in submitting completely to the will of Allah. True nobility lies in servitude to the Creator. Moreover, this verse reminds us that Allah is the One who grants knowledge, wisdom, and honor to whom He wills. Just as He blessed ʿĪsā with the Book and prophethood, He can elevate any sincere believer who strives in His path. Let us reflect on our own lives: do we begin our actions, our words, and our identities with the recognition that we are servants of Allah? If we embrace this beautiful station of servitude, Allah will honor us with His guidance, His knowledge, and His protection—just as He honored His prophet ʿĪsā, who spoke the truth even from the cradle. This is the path of honor and success, both in this world and the Hereafter.
