Surah Maryam — Verse 31

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) continues to recount the blessings and commands that Allah bestowed upon him from his very cradle, speaking as a miraculous testimony to his people. He declares: *"And He has made me blessed wherever I am"* — meaning that Allah, in His infinite mercy, placed in him a profound source of goodness and benefit for all those around him. Wherever he went, his presence brought guidance, healing, wisdom, and light. His very words and actions were a mercy to humanity, and his message was a beacon of hope for those who would listen and follow.

This blessing was not limited to a specific time or place; rather, it was universal and continuous. It teaches us a beautiful lesson: that a true believer should strive to be a source of goodness wherever they find themselves — in their home, their workplace, their community, and beyond. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *"The believer is like a fragrant flower; wherever you sit with him, you benefit from his beauty and his scent."* This is the essence of being "blessed" — to leave a positive trace in every heart and every place.

Then Jesus continues: *"And He has enjoined upon me prayer and zakāh as long as I live."* This is a profound testament to the importance of worship and charity. Allah commanded him to maintain the prayer — the intimate connection with the Creator — and to give zakāh — the purification of wealth and the support of the needy — for his entire life, without interruption or negligence.

Notice how Jesus mentions prayer and zakāh together. This pairing is repeated throughout the Qur'an, because true faith is a harmony between our relationship with Allah (through prayer) and our relationship with His creation (through charity). Prayer uplifts the soul, and zakāh purifies the heart and strengthens the community. A believer cannot be complete without both.

This verse also carries a beautiful reminder for us today: that worship is not a temporary act but a lifelong commitment. From the moment we reach accountability until we breathe our last, we are called to maintain our prayers and to care for those in need. There is no retirement from worship, and no age limit for goodness. As long as the heart beats, the tongue should remember Allah, the body should bow in prayer, and the hand should give in charity.

Reflect, dear reader, on the character of Jesus (peace be upon him) — a servant of Allah, humble and devoted, who from his very cradle glorified his Lord and dedicated his entire existence to worship and service. This is the model of righteousness that Islam presents to us. Let us strive to emulate this blessed character in our own lives, so that we too may be a source of blessing wherever we are, and so that our lives may be adorned with prayer and charity until we meet our Lord.
