Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zalaltum (زَلَلْتُمْ): You slip, deviate, or stumble from the straight path after having been firmly upon it.
- Bayyinat (الْبَيِّنَاتُ): Clear, decisive proofs and evidences that leave no room for doubt—referring to the verses of the Qur'an, the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the manifest signs of truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, if you slip and deviate from the path of truth after the clear proofs have already reached you—after the Qur'an has been revealed, after the Prophet (peace be upon him) has conveyed the message, and after the signs of Allah's oneness and wisdom have become manifest—then know with certainty that Allah is 'Aziz (Mighty, Dominant over all things, and fully capable of seizing you in His power) and Hakim (All-Wise, who places everything in its proper station, and who does not punish except with perfect justice and profound purpose).
This verse serves as a grave warning: deviation after knowledge is far more severe than ignorance. When the truth has been made crystal clear, turning away from it is not a minor mistake—it is a deliberate straying that invites Allah's might and wisdom to act. His might means no one can escape His grasp, and His wisdom means His response is always measured, just, and fitting to the deed.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in its balance between hope and caution! It does not say that a single slip destroys you forever—rather, it calls you to *know* Allah's attributes so that you may return to Him in repentance and humility. The One who is Mighty is also the One who is Wise; He does not punish out of whimsy, but out of perfect justice. And because He is Wise, He also opens the door of forgiveness for those who sincerely turn back. So if you ever feel yourself stumbling, let this verse awaken your heart: the proofs have come, the truth is clear, and Allah is watching with might and wisdom. Let that knowledge pull you back to the straight path with renewed devotion, for His mercy is vast, but His justice is real—and both flow from His perfect wisdom. Take this as a call to deepen your faith, to cling to the Qur'an and Sunnah, and to never let a moment of weakness define your journey. Allah loves those who return to Him, and He is ever ready to guide the sincere heart.
